Question 1/ Pregunta 1:
I live in a colonia and do not have access to potable water. I wait for the pipa every week to fill the containers with water. I've been using containers I get from the maquiladora across the street for a while now. I always clean them before I fill them with water and boil the water once I am ready to drink it. I still wonder if this is enough. Is there more I can do to make sure the water is safe to drink?

Vivo en una colonia y no tengo acceso al agua potable. Cada semana espero a la pipa para llenar los tambos con agua. Hace rato que he estado usando tambos que consigo en la maquiladora de enfrente para guardar el agua. Siempre los lavo antes de llenarlos y hiervo el agua cuando ya me la voy a tomar. De todas formas, me pregunto si esto es suficiente. ¿Hay algo más que pueda hacer para cerciorarme que el agua sea segura para beber?

Question 2/ Pregunta 2:
I've been working at a maquiladora for a while now. Lately, I have been
getting really bad headaches. I get dizzy spells at work and I am anxious and depressed all the time. I even missed work the other day because I felt too sick. I cannot afford to miss work anymore. What could be causing this and what should I do?

He estado trabajando en una maquiladora desde hace tiempo. Últimamente me
ha estado doliendo mucho la cabeza. Me mareo en el trabajo y me la paso
nerviosa y deprimida todo el tiempo. Hasta falté al trabajo el otro día de tan mal que me sentía. No puedo estar faltando. ¿Qué me puede estar causando estos
malestares y qué puedo hacer?

Question 3/ Pregunta 3:
I am very concerned about getting cancer. A lot of people I grew up with, people that live in my town, are getting cancer and dying. Sometimes, it seems as though more people are getting cancer here than anywhere else. What is happening to the people in my community?

Estoy muy preocupada de que me vaya a dar cáncer. A mucha gente con la que crecí, gente de mi barrio, les esta dando cáncer y se están muriendo. A veces, parece que hay más gente con cáncer aquí que en cualquier otro lugar. ¿Por qué se están enfermando?

Question 4/ Pregunta 4:
I live by an abandoned factory that made car batteries. It has been closed for some time now but lately I have noticed many of my neighbors complaining of similar ailments at our weekly community association meetings. I know of other communities that have had similar experiences, communities also located near factories. Could there be a connection between people getting sick and the factory even though the factory has been closed for so long?

Vivo cerca de una maquiladora donde fabricaban baterías para carros. Ya tiene rato cerrada pero últimamente me he dado cuenta que mis vecinos se están quejando de dolores similares en las juntas semanales de la colonia. Se que hay otras comunidades que han tenido la misma experiencia, comunidades que se encontraban cerca de fábricas como la nuestra. Puede haber alguna conección entre personas enfermandose y la fábrica aunque la fábrica ya tenga mucho tiempo cerrada?

Question 5/ Pregunta 5:
I live close to the U.S.-Mexico border. There is an alleyway next to my backyard. A lot of people walk or drive through this alley and leave trash behind. I wouldn't worry so much if it was only candy wrappers or plastic bags, but they also leave needles behind. I am afraid to clean this up because I've heard you can get all kinds of diseases by touching the needles. What can I do to protect myself and my children from these hazards?

Vivo cerca de la línea de México con Estados Unidos. Hay un callejón al lado de mi casa. Mucha gente camina y conduce por este callejón, dejando basura tirada por donde quiera. No me preocupara tanto si nada mas fueran envolturas de dulces y bolsas de plástico, pero también tiran jeringas. Me da miedo recoger la basura porque he oído que se puede contagiar uno con alguna enfermedad al tocar las jeringas. Que puedo hacer para protegerme a mi y a mis niños de estos peligros?

Lately my children are getting stomachaches and diarrhea. My neighbor says
it might be the water from the faucet. I cannot afford to buy bottled water at
the store. How do I know if the water is safe to drink? What can I do to purify it?

Ultimamente mis niños se han quejado de dolores de estómago y les ha dado mucha diarrea. Mi vecino me dice que puede ser el agua de la llave. No me alcanza para estar comprando botellas de agua en la tienda. Cómo puedo saber si el agua es segura para beber? Qué puedo hacer para purificarla?

I grew up by the smelter and have always had breathing problems. My doctor told me I have asthma. I know that when I'm around people that smoke, it gets worse. What can I do to feel better?

Crecí cerca de la fundición y siempre he tenido problemas al respirar. Mi doctor me dice que es asma. He notado que cuando estoy con gente que fuma, me pongo peor. Que puedo hacer para sentirme mejor?

Question 8/ Pregunta 8:
The summer months are the worse! Roaches, ants, flies and mosquitoes in my house drive me insane! My first thought is to buy insecticides and poison to kill bugs and cover the whole house with them, but I worry about my kids breathing this stuff and accidentally poisoning themselves. Are bug sprays and other types of poison ok to use? What can I do to make sure I am not harming my children when I use these products?

Los meses de verano son de lo peor. Las cucarachas, hormigas, moscas y zancudos en mi casa me vuelven loca. Lo primero que se me ocurre es comprar esos insecticidas y venenos y rociarlos por toda la casa, pero me preocupa que esto les haga daño a mis hijos. ¿Es malo usar insecticidas? ¿ Cómo puedo asegurarme de que no les estoy haciendo daño a mis niños al usar estos productos?

I've heard that lead can be hazardous. To be honest, I am not sure what lead really is. I've heard that sometimes paint contains lead. Is it true that some Mexican candies and pottery have it as well? What exactly is lead and why do they say it can be harmful?

Por ahi he oído que el plomo puede ser peligroso. La verdad es que no estoy segura de que sea el plomo realmente. He oído que a veces la pintura contiene plomo. ¿Es cierto que algunos dulces mexicanos y ciertos tipos de cerámica o barro contienen plomo también? ¿Qué es el plomo realmente y porque dicen que puede ser dañino?
